Patty & Jimmy (パティ&ジミー, Pati & Jimī) are a cute little couple and two best friends! Patty & Jimmy are a friendly pair of Sanrio characters. Patty first appeared in 1974, and Jimmy made first appeared a year after she herself did. They have lived in houses right next to each other in Kansas City, so they naturally became the best of friends. They're a delightful duo that stick together all the time (although Patty has an advantage with sports as she is always coming out on top while Jimmy doesn't find them his strong suit, but the relationship is flipped with academics, where she is below him).

Description[]

Any sport is OK with Patty! She likes tennis, roller skating, and baseball. She can bat and pitch as well as any boy. When it comes to studying, she'd rather not, especially writing essays and doing homework. She's bright, cheerful, tomboyish, and a little clumsy!

Jimmy is a very kind and academic-minded young boy. He is the best in the class at chess and loves arithmetic. You will often find him studying or playing chess and card games. Jimmy doesn't like sports! He's always losing to Patty. He prefers reading.

Appearance[]

Patty & Jimmy wear red, white, and blue clothes. Patty usually wears outfits in which the dominant color is red, while Jimmy's outfits usually have a dominant color of blue. It's common for them to wear overalls or sports jerseys with their first initial on the chest. Both have blond hair. Patty's hair is parted in the center with two braided pigtails. Jimmy's hair is curly and a little messy. Their eyes are solid black circles, and Patty's nose is a dot, while Jimmy's nose is a very small oval.

Origin[]

Patty was first created around the mid-70s when Roko Maeda decided to draw the back view of a girl in her notebook. She chose to draw from that angle because she wasn't confident in drawing pretty faces and preferred to imagine them instead. While looking over what she drew, Maeda started to envision her face as someone who wasn't the prettiest-looking girl, but rather an average-looking one you see in every classroom who was very active on the playground, whose physical appearance helped to tell a lot about her tomboyish, energetic personality. Slowly, the drawing of the girl was becoming a whole new character for Maeda, and the line "Love is a little wish" was added below her. However, Maeda felt like it wasn't enough and decided it was time to give her creation a name. She considered Anne, Marie, Annette, and Cathie as names but was unsatisfied with how they sounded. She wanted a name that sounded more active and made you feel her energy. Maeda finally chose the name Patty after running through more names like Julie and Peggy.

When Patty was put on a tote bag as one of the first Patty & Jimmy products designed, Shintaro Tsuji hated it and believed it wouldn't sell well, along with Patty being a human character (he greatly preferred animal mascots) and having the tote bag's design cluttered up with English lettering on it. Nevertheless, the tote bag continued to be sold, and soon enough, Roko Maeda decided to make a new character to go along with Patty.

Jimmy was created about a year after Patty was made. Roko had become very close with Patty creator-wise, but felt it was necessary to give Patty a friend because she didn't like seeing her all by herself. After drawing from her visits to the United States and American television shows such as The Donna Reed Show to build upon the world Patty lived in, Maeda began to create a boy character who was really close to Patty as a friend. After he was drawn, she pondered over names that were simple and short, such as Tom, Bill, and Dan, before settling on Jimmy.

Sometime after the creation of Patty and Jimmy, Dora and Billy were created (see their pages for more information).

Trivia[]

  • Patty & Jimmy are similar in their relationship to Patricia "Peppermint Patty" Reidchart and Marcie from Peanuts. Jimmy is the Sanrio analogue to Marcie in the relationship, since he is an academic person who performs poorly at sports. Patty mirrors Peppermint Patty, since she has talent with sports, but sucks with school.
